The story is about the flashbacks of Bi Dayou (old B)s lifetime memory, a hotpot restaurant owner at the last moment of his life.Looking at the guests he encountered in the hot pot restaurant is like seeing his own life. The young couple reminded the old B of his youth, while the middle-aged poor couple took him back to his failed marriage. No matter how successful or how hard a persons life was, there should be countless memories of himself. In a sense, the fragments of these memories constitute his entire life. Guests in the hot pot restaurant are pieces of a noisy real life. And these pieces collide with old Bs life experience with sparks. Then, the story goes into these sparks which connect old Bs important slices of life together. It turns out all those guests in the hot pot restaurant are with old B in different ages. Finally, the story goes back to the current, those guests are still guests, but old B already left. We try to go deep into the trivial pieces of life and show the essence of the joys and sorrows in life through a nobodys various feelings. The work itself cannot give an answer, but it is intended to show and explore. Great Volume Songs of the Bai People is a form of storytelling and is the intangible cultural heritage of Dali Prefecture, Yunnan province. This art form matured in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and gradually declined afterwards. This work combines Great Volume Songs of the Bai People with drama, physical theatre, and modern puppet show. The plot is based on the story of two village gods Baijie and Lord of East Mountain who are a loving couple in Benzhuism (the worship of local gods) which is the indigenous religion typical of the Bai People. The focus of the story is on the couple wearing the wrong shoes, while the play uses the ancient anecdote about the two gods to explore the philosophical issue of freedom and bondage in marriage from a contemporary perspective.
The libretto of this work has been adapted from The Painted Skin, a short story by the Qing Dynasty writer Pu Songling. Its strange plot and strong moral message have made it a classic. Our version seeks to interpret Pus story from a modern perspective, adding new layers by fleshing out the characters inner worlds and exploring the moral message of the story, which raises eternal themes of desire, temptation, sacrifice, and free choice. Both the music and libretto embody Chinese elements, and the stage action integrates physical movement with singing in a profound way. On these two foundations we hope to bring about an innovation in the form of classical Western opera and give this classic tale a new life on stage.
The work is based on The Old Man and the Sea, one of the most famous novel of E. M. Hemingway. The suppositive way and the realistic style used by it shapes the collision and fusion between Chinese culture and the Western. Its stylization, virtuality, minimalism and form sense are the basic principles that have formed the work. What performs in the stage is a recreation of the work with the elements of traditional Chinese theatrical art. The combination of traditional impressionism and modern realism in the field of drama shortens the mental distance between stage and audience and also creates a special experience in both real life and art performance for the audience.
We are going to face the conflict of modern culture and traditional culture. When traditional culture rotted by modern culture, where should the traditional culture go?It does not mean that traditional culture and modern culture cannot coexist. They need to merge each other and address the contradictories continuously, which may be the best explanation. As the younger generation, we have the obligation and responsibility to reignite the brightness of traditional culture. We will find that traditional culture and modern culture could balance themselves in certain areas, and Root will have it all explained.Root, the cradle of primary, breeding, feeding, educating;Root, the home of spirituality, peace, pure, true;Root, the fetter of tenderness, care, bloodline, origin;Root, the boundless support, free, inclusive, purifying… General Director: Baima CirenDirector: Suolang Qundan, Yang Zhen, Zhu XinyunDancer: Suolang Qundan, Baima Ciren, Yang Zhen, Zhu Xinyun, Zeng Gui, Chen Xinglin, Sai Boyuan
Three hundred years ago, Chen Duansheng, the author of The Destiny of Rebirth (Zai Sheng Yuan), wrote a heroine Meng Lijun who was ahead of the times but could not break through the shackles of tradition. Then she stopped writing, leaving the story unfinished.Today, the adapted story gives more meanings to the heroine. With life billows, Meng Lijun becomes a woman who pursuits equality and freedom. Meanwhile, she is quite clear that from the viewpoint of the worldly eyes, marriage is the only way for females to be happy. Even though women are as talented as men, they often feel helpless trying to fulfill their dreams against the reality. We hope that after rebirth of Meng Lijun, her ‘free mind will provoke more self-reflection and compassion against women of the modern society. During late Tang Dynasty, a time in history of turbulence and uncertainty, young Li Shanfu met Luo Niang who had been living in the mountains. How would they keep promises built on lies? Two solitary souls embraced each other in silence and sorrow. Rosy dreams were buried in wind and snow. This film-textured Kunqu Opera with unsolved mysteries has an unexpectedly lively rhythm. Fantasies and reality seamlessly blend to explore characters multidimensional inner selves. These characters then become mirrors, reflecting the era and society. At the same time, this blend creates an invisible dialogue between Changan and Zhongnanshan, the most important city and mountain in Chinese culture. As the production team, Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe has injected youthful vitality into the classical and traditional expression of art. * Changan, now known as Xian in Shaanxi Province, was the capital city for 13 dynasties across the Chinese history. The leading creator attempts to focus on the average age of 70 years old who living in the remote areas and having been engaged in the primary industry for a long time. They think those people also have the right to express art. Those old people use their nearly a century of world cognition and the most primitive impulses to paint. They record their life, painting state, and the changes after painting, and then display these "virgins" and video materials to show their different life and artistic practice status. This is the first one of their works, and perhaps their last one.
Star is an experimental artistic work which discusses the art inheritance. When we look up to the sky and watch the numerous stars, it is hard to imagine that the light of star has already gone through hundred millions of light years. That brightest star we can see now may have long gone. How about the dissemination of arts? Those maestros whom we adore today have already passed away; while their works are just as bright as the stars, which attract future generations to study and explore. The world without the works of these maestros is just like the pitch-dark universe without the light of stars. In the work, we take light as the carrier. With the combination of music, dance and image, we convey our enthusiasm and insistence to art to the audience from the bottom of our heart.
